Character info

Character name: Reyson
Canon: Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.
Canon point & release date: Endgame. The game was released for the Game Cube, so....
History: History Here
CRAU (if applicable): N/A
Powers (no more than 150 words):

As a Laguz:

- Shift between his Beast Form and his human-like form, in this case turning into a large white heron.
- Aid his comrades with status buiffs/debuffs and extra movement capability via singing.
- Moderate healing abilities via song, except on himself.

As a Heron:

- Empathic sensitivity to his surroundings. Violence makes him ill, and even eating meat leaves him bedridden for a week.
- Seid Magic, the source of the magic in his songs. This, with his royal blood, allows him (with his sister) to 1) revive the dying Serenes Forest, and 2) Restore those who's minds had been corrupted by experimental magic.

In General:

- Reyson is Multilingual, able to speak both the Beorc language and the ancient language of the Laguz
- After 20+ years with the Hawk clan, Reyson has some understanding of self defense and battle tactics. Additionally, he knows the basics of sailing and many sea shanties

Personality

What is your character most afraid of? How are they defined by this fear? (200-300 words)

Weakness is the thing that Reyson is the most afraid of. He repeatedly attempts feats that are impossible for him for the sake of getting stronger, and makes commentary about wishing he had a big body and strong wings like Tibarn, so that his body could keep up with the fires in his heart. Part of this fear is out of self preservation-- the attack on the Serenes Forest tore everything he knew about his family and his world apart, and he cannot stand the idea of being reduced to a shell of what he was because of trauma, like what happened to his father in the aftermath of the fire.

This is above all an extension of Reyson's drive to protect the fragments of his family and their legacy that he can, as well as his desire to mete out justice for all of the Herons that can no longer sing.

However: this also manifests as an inability to trust. Before meeting Ike and the mercenaries over the course of Path of Radiance, Reyson loathed the idea even interacting with humans after what they did to his home and his family. The Herons were renowned for thier pacifistic ways, but Reyson did nothing to stop Tibarn and the other Hawks from committing acts of piracy against human ships as a matter of petty revenge. This inability to trust humans, however, also manifested in his willingness to blindly trust other Laguz-- which he paid for when his childhood friend Naesala sold him out to a human Duke as part of a grander ploy.

For Reyson, everything goes back to the Trauma he endured. He's slowly working through his biases on every angle, but it's a long process.

What is your character's greatest desire? How are they defined by this desire? (200-300 words)

Reyson's greatest desire is to see his family and his kingdom restored. This, fundamentally, is impossible. The attack on Serenes Forest 20+ years ago resulted in most of his siblings being killed and captured, and his father never fully recovered from the traumatic loss of this destruction. He has spent these last decades living amongst the Hawk clan at the behest of King Tibarn, and during that time the pain of his traumas and caring for his ailing father has grown and festered into a thirst for revenge.

Reyson's powers have diminished after years of fostering this rage in his heart. Reyson is no longer able to wield them with the finesse that he had when he was younger. Over the course of Path of Radiance, the players do see that the Serenes Forest is able to be restored... but Reyson was only able to do so after reuniting with his younger sister Leanne and allowing some of the rage in his heart to be soothed by this. Even then, it's only with the talents of his sibling at his side that he is able to work any of the Seid magic. However--

What is a kingdom if there is no one left to populate it? What is the worth of a royal bloodline if only two (which, as we discover in Radiant Dawn, is actually three) siblings remain-- and none of them are in love with another heron?

The world that Reyson desperately wants back can no longer exist and will never be able to exist again. This is the fundamental tragedy of Reyson's character, and it is only in accepting this and that the details of the world are not black and white will Reyson ever be able to move forward.

What is your character's most defining memory or relationship? How are they defined by this relationship? (200-300 words)

Reyson's defining memory is the Serenes Massacre, but his defining relationship is with the King of the Hawk Tribe, Tibarn. In the aftermath of the Serenes Massacre, which resulted in the death or capture of nearly all of the kingdom's inhabitants-- including his mother and nearly all of his siblings, it was Tibarn and his people who were within closest range to assist. Tibarn had his people gather help from other clans and orchestrated the initial first responses, and personally took both Reyson and his wounded father under wing and into his personal care. Tibarn watched over Reyson and his father for twenty years and served as the primary advocate as well as guide and friend to Reyson during that time-- comforting Reyson in the depths of his grief, encouraging new coping strategies and activities, as well as both protecting Reyson and teaching him how to defend himself.

During this time, Tibarn also took it upon himself to act in the stead of the Herons-- attacking ships from the Beorc kingdom that dared to pass near the cliffs of Phoenicis in a petty means of revenge for what happened to the Serenes Forest-- until they found a better means.

Reyson condoned these actions despite the pacifistic nature of the Herons. He additionally grew to idolize Tibarn over that time, admiring Tibarn's 'big body and strong wings' to the point that he emulated Tibarn in an attempt to gain similar strength himself. All his attempts failed-- but, to Tibarn, Reyson's greatest strength isn't in his fists but in his iron will to survive.

How will not having memories change your character? What core personality traits, if any, will change? How? (200-300 words)

The core matter that Reyson does not currently remember is the wanton destruction of his family and his people, which set off the entire scale of his life for the last twenty years and entirely changed his path in life. Without those memories, Reyson will still be impulsive but significantly less rage driven. In canon, a large part of his spitfire temper is because he has that rage burning at the bottom of his heart. Without it, and in combination with his natural empathy, he is more likely to be molded by the environment that he is currently living in and the events/shifts in mood that will come along with day-to-day activity.

Like how in canon, much of his current behavior is molded by his modeling of Tibarn and the hawks as well as generally absorbing their vibes after decades of life along their cliffs, he is going to similarly end up mirroring whomever he ends up spending the most time with. Given how his few memories currently contain suggestions of Tibarn's piracy, Reyson is going to believe that he is a pirate for a while.

Additionally, without recollection of his royal status or much about the Herons as a people overall, he will be less stiff and distant than he is in canon. This more personable, adaptable Reyson with his petulance and impulsivity is who will be arriving in Well.

Memories

You have 10 memory points. How will you use them?

Type of regain: 1 points.
Recollection of sea shanties, and the homes built into the cliffsides where he would watch ships pass by.

Type of regain: 3 points.
Taking care of his ailing father in those same cliffside dwellings, with the knowledge that this has been happening for a very long time.

Type of regain: 2 points.
Trying to help Tibarn and the others of the Hawk clan in one of their pirate raids-- with Tibarn ordering him to stay back.

Type of regain: 2 points.
The knowledge that he's an empath and some of the understanding that comes with it... at least enough to know that he's not just crazy for his emotional and physical reactions, even if he doesn't know everything that it entails.

Type of regain: 2 points.
Singing, as well as his general musical expertise. This includes playing a harp and being able to harmonize with nearly every song. However, this does not include knowledge of his magic or how it affects people.

The magic will remain, but only enough to give the listener the energy to do the work of two people-- not enough to restore corrupted minds or revive dying forests.

CRAU History and Impact: N/A

Personality: As a result of residing within the Hawk Kingdom of Phoenicis for the last two decades, Reyson has picked up many traits that are counterpoint to what is considered traditional for the Heron tribes that lived in the quiet peace of the Serenes Forest. Where his siblings are calm and serene, Reyson is stubborn, short tempered, and headstrong, and more than willing to resort to violence when he sees it as being necessary. His lineage is questioned multiple times because of this and, even though the aura of the battlefield makes him physically ill, he is more than willing to sacrifice his own well being for the sake of what was initially vengeance for the fate of his family, but then finally ending the Mad King's War for the greater good of Tellius.

Upon first meeting Reyson, he is understandably angry and disgusted with the Beorc race in general for the Serenes massacre carried out by the Kingdom of Begnion. His anger pushed him to the brink of despair, where he was willing to use a forbidden magic and potentially destroy himself for the sake of destroying all of humanity-- but it was finding his younger sister, Leanne, alive after twenty long years and meeting Ike that pulled him back from the edge. It is only upon his sister's insistence that he finds it within himself to forgive the Apostle Sanaki for the acts of her predecessor, and only because of Ike's personality that he is able to come to appreciate Beorcs for what they are.

Besides these traits, Reyson also continually strives to become stronger than he is under the mistaken belief that this may have helped prevent his family's fate. He expresses a desire to have a 'big body' and 'strong wings' like Tibarn, the Hawk King, and he even pushes himself to the point of near death by trying to eat meat under the belief that this will help him become stronger. He does realize that he has strength of mind and spirit in spades, for a weaker soul would not have lasted as long as he has under these circumstances, but he also believes that spiritual strength isn't enough in the battlefield. When it's insisted upon that he have a bodyguard accompany him in battle, he stubbornly refuses-- and then proceeds to find a way to save the life of the one who made this suggestion with his strength of will alone. His anger over being betrayed by Naesala and sold to Duke Tanas led him to punch the Duke in the nose. It broke his hand to do so, but-- as he informs Ike later on, it felt good to do it.

Unlike his siblings, Reyson is associated with the passion's fiery flames. His iron will is indomitable, and he is more than willing to break every bond and surmount every obstacle to see his goals through to the end.

As a Laguz of the Heron tribe, but heavily influenced by the Hawk tribe of Phoenicis because of his time spent under Tibarn's care, Reyson acts in many ways as if he were one of the Hawks despite the odd gravitas he carries himself with at times. Around other Laguz he tries to act bigger and stronger than he actually is, and he actually adopts rougher forms of speech as a means of trying to convey this. He doesn't make friends easily, and often causes Janaff and Ulki to go chasing after him because of his headstrong ways. Additionally, his previous friendship with Naesala in his youth led him to be blinded to Naesala's treachery too late, resulting him him being brought to Duke Tanas and sparking the events that unfolded afterward. At the assembly of Laguz kings he is impetuous, and needs to be reminded that acting out of vengeance would spark cycle of hatred.

Comparatively, toward his family Reyson is the loving and devoted older brother to Leanne who is willing to protect his innocent sister from any and all danger, and he is the dedicated son who stayed by the side of his ailing father for many long years after the massacre of his family and his people. With his family separated and many lost, Reyson cherishes the scraps of family he has left and even in many ways sees the other Laguz he has met from the Bird Tribes as an extended part of it. Naesala, for all of his treachery, was one of his companions in his youth whom he trusted enough to not see any greater ambitions. Tibarn is in many ways the mentor figure that he needed as his guide.

As a note, when he later finds his elder brother Rafiel during the events of Radiant Dawn, he takes care to use softer forms of speech so as to not scare his elder brother. In many ways, Rafiel is just as innocent as Leanne and just as much in need of protecting in Reyson's mind.

Regarding his interactions with the Beorc after meeting with Ike, he tries to treat them similarly to how he treats his fellow Laguz. That being, he acts tougher than he is and eschews aid from Tanith-- all the while expressing irritable bewilderment over Tormod's suggestion of turning the desert he hailed from into a fertile landscape.

He still defines himself as separate from the Beorc-- obvious when he makes commentary about Beorc children being so restless, but he no longer uses the word 'Human' for them. While the Beorcs call themselves Human, to a Laguz that word is as much a slur as 'Sub-Human' is when referring to a Laguz. Of note in his conversation with Tormod as well is his offer to allow Tormod's band of refugees to take sanctuary in the Serenes Forest once the war was over, so long as they adhered to the ancient rules of the forest regarding the consumption of meat-- as Herons are biologically vegetarians who are unable to eat meat without falling physically ill. Despite all of this, he insists on just being called by his name without any titles or honorifics-- as if he were trying to interact with the Greil Mercenaries as an equal rather than as the Third Prince of Serenes.

Because, in many ways, that's how he wants to see himself. And it's a chance that he is willing to take, even if it's only for a short while.

In summation, Reyson cuts the picture of princely dignity and grace yet finds his personality in stark contrast with the values of his destroyed people. The pacifism and gentle nature they upheld in the end did nothing to protect his family and kingdom from being taken to the torch, and thus he's taken it upon himself to seek revenge-- and, once reunited with his siblings, protect them to the utmost of his skills. He is egalitarian by all accounts despite his status, and bades everyone from King Tibarn of Phoenicis to the pegasus knight Tanith to refer to him by first name alone. Likewise, he does the same and treats everyone as if they were equals. This however is balanced by his headstrong nature, impulsivity, and quick temper. He is as likely to throw punches as he is to engage in negotiations, and that is a double edged sword in all of his affairs.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping: As a Laguz, Reyson is granted with the ability to shift between his human-like form and his beast form like all of his brethren. In this particular case, Reyson's beast form takes the shape of a large white heron. Despite his combative demeanor, Reyson is far from being a viable combat unit in terms of gameplay and, instead-- in classic Fire Emblem style-- he is one of the rare archetypes that allow other soldiers on the battlefield to take an extra turn through the use of his chants and songs, called Galdrs in Tellius. In terms of RP, this can be described as how a person can feel more energized and invigorated after listening to a particularly emphatic or emotional performance-- energized enough to do the work of two people!

Furthermore, it's heavily implied that Reyson has an empathic sensitivity to his surroundings-- war and violence make him physically ill, and succumbing to his anger puts him at risk of losing the core of his very being-- the serenity that allows him to access the ancient Seid magic of the Herons.

He has a moderate healing ability with his Galdrs as well, but he is unable to use this on himself if he is hurt.

With his sister Leanne alongside of him singing the Galdr of Rebirth, the two Serenes royals were able to revive the dying Serenes forest-- but this is a one time accomplishment that he was only able to complete with his sister alongside of him. Similarly, Leanne and Reyson's work with the Galdr of Rebirth was able to restore the mind of the ancient dragon Rajaion after it had been distorted through experimental magic-- allowing the dragon some reprieve in his final moments. Once again, as Reyson's powers as a Heron have weakened due to his time with the Hawk clans, he is limited in what he is able to accomplish but he is very versatile in what he can do compared to his siblings.

He's also multilingual in context with Tellius, able to speak both the ancient language of the Galdrs and the modern language with equal ease.

In Deerington, all of these can be warped to have inconsistent effects that range from drowsiness and debuffs alongside the ordinary effects, if they take effect at all. The more tense the situation, the more likely he is to experience difficulty enacting the magic of his songs. In terms of his galdr's ability to return a person to their rightful mind when in a feral or deluded state, that will most likely only work on player characters if the other player so wishes for it to work. His native empathy is not a matter that comes up often in terms of game mechanics within Path of Radiance, however it is mentioned frequently in character conversations. As even his dulled senses from being away from his homeland for so long is enough to make him feel ill in times of war, that can be amplified during plot relevant events and can impede his ordinary drive to push through no matter the odds.

Positive Trait: Egalitarian. Reyson, by all accounts, isn't one to play favorites with anyone besides his dear family and sees everyone as working on a level playing field. All he ever asks for-- repeatedly, and stubbornly-- is that he be treated the same way.
Negative Traits: Headstrong, Impulsive, Quick-Tempered. These all are traits that meshed together and came to the forefront after the massacre of his people by the Begnion forces 20 years before the start of the story, both as a reaction to his sense of helplessness and grief over his people and his family in the aftermath and how he absorbed the influences of the Hawks of Pheonicis during his time under Tibarn's care.

Abilities: As a Laguz, Reyson is granted with the ability to shift between his human-like form and his beast form like all of his brethren. Furthermore, it's heavily implied that Reyson has an empathic sensitivity to his surroundings-- war and violence make him physically ill, and succumbing to his anger puts him at risk of losing the core of his very being.

Once agaln, as Reyson's powers as a Heron have weakened due to his time with the Hawk clans, he is limited in what he is able to accomplish but he is very versatile in what he can do compared to his siblings.

He's also multilingual in context with Tellius, able to speak both the ancient language of the Galdrs and the modern language with equal ease.

Alignment: Sosyne. Heron type Laguz are noted for their serenity and calm-- however, Reyson in his grief over what happened to his family and his people, decided to eschew the traditional ways and allows himself to feel the more negative emotions of anger and rage. His lineage is questioned many times because of his hawkish demeanor, and he has been known to succumb to his feelings and attack someone with his fists if he's pushed hard enough.

[For all of the bustle of the city, it was quiet in Verens. Not the kind of quiet found in the forests of his homeland, but a different kind of quiet that was reinforced by a lack of familiarity with any of the places or people that populated the city. The foreign lights around Reyson dimmed in with the odd melancholy of his mood, the air growing cool around him as he thought of the faces he missed-- for he had never been so alone in his life before.

Not even after the massacre of his family had the silence been quite this deep. Tibarn had taken his family in, and the hawks of Phoenicis had surrounded both him and his grieving, ailing father with strong arms and protective wings. Even amongst the Greil Mercenaries there was always the sounds feet scuffling through the campsite or some familiar voice laughing.

This was going to be... difficult, he determined. The people of this land knew nothing of Laguz or Beorcs, but by the same token it was oddly freeing.

He could live as himself, for the first time in his decades of life. He didn't need to follow societal rules and adhere to what was expected of his social standing. He could be himself-- like Ike, like Tibarn, and he didn't need to worry.

The air around him warmed slightly at this, emanating from him as if a fire had been stoked within the depths of his heart. It was hope-- hope of becoming the man he always wanted to be, and one day make everyone from Tibarn of Phoenicis, to Ike, to even his younger sister-- lost for so many years but found again-- proud of who he was.]
